User:Poco a poco/Report

Hello!!, this is a personal report after attending Wikimania 2015 in Mexico, my third Wikimania.

The talks I attended are listed here and apart from that I also attended the most popular events after the regular programme.

Meeting of Wikipedia Spain during Wikimania (I took the picture, will not find me there :).
Me with some friends (I have a checked shirt).
Location of the evening event on Saturday.
Initial venue of Wikimania.
  • Opening ceremony: I enjoyed it very much, the speakers put a lot of enthusiasm and the live events were great. With a bit more of light I could have though got better results in the pictures I took of those events.
  • The coolest projects of Wikimedia Chapters - be inspired: The winner project, Wikicheese, was really inspiring for me and I learned that going for a crowdfunding could be a very smart idea. We are investigating similar projects now in WMES.
  • De una reunión de amigos a la reunión anual del movimiento Wikimedia: I wanted to have a first impression of what the Wikimania team wanted to say about all those long and hard months of preparation. I think that WMES could host this event and for me it was a lessons learned. The team spirit was great, and that was, for sure, the key of success.
  • Real-Time Collaborative Editing
  • Sum of all paintings: This speech was something than I expected and was very much focused on the metadata to accomplish this kind of project.
  • Funding the movement's dreams: How FDC works and help build strong organizations: It was good to get to know the team behind the FDC and how they aim to work. I think that the mix of people is very good and this process healthy for the movement.
  • Wiki Loves Meetup including WLM 2014 awards ceremony and exhibition: I attended this as I was one of the winners in 2014 and I was also curious whether there would be a international contest for WLM in 2015. I had the impression that there would be none but I am glad to know that Romaine is working on that, great!
  • Wiki takes Antropología!: That visit was really interesting and I took a lot of great pictures with my new camera. The museum was actually closed for Wikimania and therefore not crowded at all. Unfortunately my checked-in luggage in my next trip was opened and the hard disks where I stored those pictures were stolen :)
  • "L" for Laboratories and "M" for Microscopes : Redefining GLAM by partnering with a medical school: It was interesting to see that an individual can make a difference! On the other side I was a bit disappointed that there is so little material about scientific stuff in Commons. Out of that speech I decided to encourage all scientifics I know to donate media to Commons (but only if they provide an adequate description!).
  • Wikimedian in Residence at UNESCO collaboration workshop: This speech was different and spiring, we do definitely have some cool jobs in the movements and the best thing is that you can create them and make them suitable for yourself.
  • Cómo Commons me ayudó como fotógrafo: This was my own speech. There were not so many visitors as I had expected (I got good feedback from a similar speech in London and this was in Spanish for the local public), maybe just 30 (versus 80 in London). Probably the parallel speech of the WMF board didn't help me. Still, as said, those that attended it and I talked with later on where satisfied and they found it inspiring and were aiming to contribute with quality material in Commons.
  • Building up Wikidata, country by country: I always aim to attend at least one talk about Wikidata in all Wikimanias. It is refreshing to see how it develops and what new opportunities arise. My understanding of the project was increased and the horizon widened.
  • Designing Content Translation: how to improve the translation process from a user-centered perspective: Here I got in touch with tools I didn't even now that existed, like a database where projects like Wikimania can drop API messages that are translated by volunteers. I had the opportunity to do some translations, and although I don't think that I will be a long-term contributor (I'd rather translate encyclopaedic contents), it is always good to know that there is something like that and how it works.
  • Re-use of Wiki Loves Monuments photos as a hurdle race: It was interesting for me to hear about the problems that a person has to reuse the material that people like my upload in Commons (actually he used at least a picture of mine).
  • The Philippines and the Spanish Wikipedia: a roadmap towards building a new, healthy community: It was an stimulus to see how a part of the community of a country where Spanish is a minor language, fights for getting organized and creating contents in my mother tongue. At the same time I put myself in the situation of minor languages in countries like Spain, and therefore did some self reflexion.
  • Content Translation - translathon and discussion: This was great, I couldn't use the tool earlier and with help of the developers I could identify the problem (another tool prevented this tool from starting) and could gather the first experiences with this tool with great support. I actually managed to create a new middle size article. If I had had this tool some time ago the amount of articles I have translated would be 2000 instead of 1000. A weakness is though that translations from languages like Deutsch <-> Spanish are not available, only via English.
  • Visit to Museo Soumaya: The museum was really interesting, but this is something I learned too late. I started in the lower floor and went up floor by floor. The upper the more interesting stuff, and by the time I arrived to the last floor we were asked to get down. It would have been great to know that in advance and to know how much time we have for the museum visit (IMHO too much loud music and too little time for the visit). I also took some nice pictures of the venue: [1], [2], [3]
  • Breaking Commons: Feature Brainstorming and Strategizing: I had the opportunity to propose some functionalities for Commons that I have always missed, so it was conforting to have developers who understood and accepted them, but I don't know whether there will become reality.
  • My life as an autistic Wikipedian: This talk was great, the speakerr showed a lot of courage (getting on the stage and talking about private problems is not something everybody would do). There was also some experiences exchange with the public and I even can say that learn quite a lot about he sympthoms and problems of this disease.
  • Making Translated Screenshots With No Effort: The topic was itself interesting but I guess that I got lost at the beginning, I had the impression that you had to bring some knowledge to this talk not to get lost.
  • Quality matters - How to support learning and improvement in Wikimedia organizations: I participated in the group of Claudia Garád and she told us about the internal process in WMAT. It was really helpful to me because that chapter is of a similar size to WMES and this topic is something that I professionally have to do with. I also learned from Maria Cruz about learning patterns. Attending this workshop was really helpful and I had to opportunity to talk in calm with Claudia about many things (I am also member of WMAT).
  • 1 Year to get your things done and to present them at Wikimania Esino Lario: I was really curious about how the WMIT/WMCH team is preparing the event next year and had some questions and proposals for them. They are focusing on the programme more than in last editions and I that is absolutely right. In some of the speeches I attended I wasn't really sure what awaited me and from which level (beginner, medium, advanced, expert) the speaker would begin from. At the same time, now talking as a speaker, it is good to know for which kind of public your speech is aimed, as you cannot keep everybody, beginners and experts happy with a talk about a certain topic.
  • Closing party: was great to have fun and share a beer with a lot of interesting people I was willing to talk to during the conference and I didn't have a chance to do it. The venue and the organisation was great!
