Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)
Despite progress over the past years of the Wikipedia Education Program, getting teachers and schools to work with Wikipedia is still a challenge. Teachers, especially in Latin America, are still very wary of being associated with it, mostly due to an inadequate perception about Wikipedia's lack of "quality" or "veracity". Working with Wikipedia at Tec de Monterrey, Mexico City campus has grown from a small student club with one professor to an organized program called Wiki Learning which for the Spring 2015 semester has involved over fifty teachers and hundreds of students to three of the system’s 31 campuses. One major reason for the growth is the sponsorship of Wiki Learning by Tec 21 Model, a Tec de Monterrey system-wide program dedicated to promoting educational innovation, especially ideas involving technology. This presentation aims to outline how Wiki Learning came about and how linking Wikipedia with current educational theories (Constructivism, Connectivism, Peeragogy) can help promote its use not only with individual professors, but with entire institutions. We will begin by outlining what the Tec 21 Model is, its theoretical and practical underpinnings and how it has been implemented throughout the Tec de Monterrey campus system. This will include how Wiki Learning has been implemented from the perspectives of the campus library, media and communications, writing and verbal expression and foreign language. Wiki Learning is the only Tec 21 affiliated project that has the capability of meeting any and all of its goals (e.g. global viewpoint, working with technology, critical thinking, innovation, writing in English and Spanish, etc.) Lastly we will summarize the activities of the 2014-2015 school year, including the Day of the Dead photo contest, use of Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons in foreign language and Spanish classes, as credit for community service and more. The main point of the presentation is that Wiki Learning’s success is due to aligning Wikipedia’s possibilities to the aims of the institution (Tec de Monterrey) not to those of individual classes.
