Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

This presentation will describe our experience uploading a batch of 500 images of the natural and cultural landscape of Panama to Wikimedia Commons, between June and August 2014, using the GLAMWikiToolset.

“La Mochila” (Spanish for The Backpack) is an Internet portal for image searching of natural and cultural landscapes of Panama, oriented towards the national education system. It is designed to offer an initial pool of georeferenced images from organizations and institutions, and gives the possibility for students and professors to contribute their own images to the portal to be used freely.

We worked with Almanaque Azul foundation, the creators of La Mochila, to license the images with Creative Commons and, in addition to their availability in the portal, upload them to Wikimedia Commons for their use in Wikipedia articles of Panama.

The first batch consisted of 500 images owned by the Almanaque Azul foundation and donated by volunteers. Each image had at least 30 fields of metadata ranging from the regional location and ecosystem type, until scientific names of plants and animals, as well as key words related to the official curriculum of the country.

In order to deal with the diversity of information included in the metadata and facilitate the image upload, we used the GLAMWikiToolset, a tool designed to mass-upload multimedia content to Wikimedia Commons. GLAMWikiToolset makes use of XML files for content metadata.

During this presentation we will go through the steps undertaken to work with GLAMWikiToolset and the difficulties during its usage, from a non technical point of view. The XML files preparation is not an intuitive task if the user has no previous experience. As such, the objective is to give an overview of the time and effort required to master the tool (the learning curve) as well as advices to better take advantage of it.

In addition, we will describe the collaboration experience between La Mochila and Wikimedia Commons. We aim to inspire and contribute ideas to other Wikimedians and Wikimedia chapters.
