- Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)
This talk will hopefully be one part of a two parts presentation. We will be discussing the Wikipedia side of the collaborations between Wikiproject Medicine and Translators Without Borders (30 min) and the other will be an overview of the TWB aspects from the project manager at Translators Without Borders in Buenos Aires per here.(30 min)
In 2014 there was another great public health crises in Africa with the outbreak and spread of Ebola. It received incredible media attention and although the attention has faded the outbreaks is not over. We at the Medical Translation Project decided that we would do what we could and along with our long term partners at Translators Without Borders and new partners at Rubric we worked to increase the number of languages in which Wikipedia has content on Ebola by translating the first four paragraphs of our English article. We concentrated our efforts in the languages where it was needed the most. We managed to help get content into 110 languages of which more than a dozen are African languages.
While Ebola got most of the media's attention this past year, there are dozens of other health conditions that affect and result in the deaths of 10s to 100s of times more people. Some of these conditions include malaria, gastroenteritis (infectious diarrhea) and intestinal parasites. These conditions like Ebola can be dealt with at least partly through education / knowledge. Getting this content out in as many languages as possible is critical.
It's important that what we translate is both correct and of high quality. Thus a fair bit of the effort involves improving the English version of the articles to a high standard before translating begins. We need more of you to help out with the writing, maintaining and integration of articles.
